With their voluminous
dark robes, hieroglyph-inscribed medallions, fez-crowned heads,
and omnipresent tana
leaves, the High Priests of Karnak from the Kharis series command
a villainous ambience every bit as recognizable as that of the
vampire and the mad scientist.
As members of a clandestine organization which had lasted through
the centuries, these arcane individuals remained dedicated to
their task of keeping Kharis the mummy in a state of suspended
animation, ever watchful for the moment when he would need to be
brought into action.
Considered by many to be an unnecessary plot complication, the concept of a secret priesthood reflected a generalized fear of covert world-wide organizations that haunted the years of WWII. This fear, fueled by public paranoia about Axis spy rings, imbued the Karnak priests with an aura of credibility and menace that today's viewers often fail to appreciate.
